Best Picture?

This years Oscar Noms for Best Picture blog is going to be a big let down. If you came her looking for something interesting, move along. Which is appropriate, it is the same for the lot of films. Many I did not see. Those I did not see, I noted & are indicated in red.

BEST PICTURE Nominations

• American Hustle
  Saw it. Enjoyed watching it. Even stayed with me a few days and considered some moral issues. Who was really the good guy? (Answer: Irving).  Plot, good. Acting, good. Costumes, good. Tone, good. Jennifer Lawrence, per usual, over acted, but her character was supposed to be over the top, so casting, good. Pace, bad. Not only did the movie need to be cut down in length, it also needed to be built up & subsequently crash down a little bit differently. It was a slow go, they didn't pay enough attention to some interesting plot factors like the FBI in general (the boss's boss being introduced as a player so late in the game, Bradley Coopers apparent cocaine use, etc). So this movie was good. If it wins, I won't be upset, but should it? Not really. More on that later. 
• Captain Phillips
  Did not see. I am still mad about international waters. See here and here for more information. 
• Dallas Buyers Club
  Will see.
• Gravity
  No. I wanted to leave it at just that, but I am compelled to tell you that this movie was a pretty picture. Space is pretty, Sandra is pretty, even George is pretty. Just a pretty face. Just a pretty movie. The dialogue was painful to watch. And if ever there was a way to make a type-A personality cringe, it is to have some ostensible "genius" in space who can't pull it together. If you are thinking "oh have some compassion, she was scared out of her mind", then I dare you to throw me in that shuttle heading to Mars in a few years, because I know with out a flag-moon-shadow of a doubt, I'd hold it together way more that that lady did. When I found out it was written by a non-native-english speaker, everything made so much more sense; because what didn't make sense is the way they tried to play off her thoughts as deep. 
• Her
  Yes. There were two things that would have taken this move from great to greatest: 1.) Less phone sex. 2.) Them leaping to their deaths at the end of the movie. When they were up there on top of the Beverly Wilshire Tower, I for certain thought they were over reality. They were done with this place. I wanted them to jump. I have respect for the movie though, the writer/director payed attention to details. It was well made.

• Nebraska
  Did not see. Too boring. Even the colors are boring. 

• Philomena
  Did not see. Too old. I am an ageist. 
• 12 Years a Slave
  Did not/will not see. Too violent. 

   The Wolf of Wall Street
   Did not see. Forgot to include it in the first draft of this post. To which I say: F***!

So, what picture do I think got snubbed? 
Blue Jasmine. It did just as good of a job as the ones nominated. And it was interesting enough for me to even want to see it. Actually, it should win best picture. It was not only really well done, I am having a hard time thinking it had any flaws. 

And finally, not necessarily the "best" but the film I enjoyed watching the most in 2013 was by far "Before Midnight". 

I'd also like to thank the academy for not nominating Mud for anything. I hated it.
